The London Books Fair's new Sustainability Initiative Award, a component of the organization's yearly International Excellence Awards, has shortlisted Bloomsbury Publishing, Penguin Random House UK, and New Society Publishers (Canada). To recognize the "increasing relevance of sustainability measures within publishing," the category was added this year.

The International Excellence Awards (IEAs), now in its tenth year, honor organizations and people who exhibit "passion, innovation, and inventiveness" in the publishing industry across four categories.

Seven different nations are represented on this year's shortlists, with Kosovo being included for the first time. North America stands out with five nominations.

Bloomsbury Publishing is included twice in the Sustainability and Inclusivity categories, while New Society Publishers of Canada and Pushkin Industries of the United States make their shortlist debuts.

The Inclusivity in Publishing Award, accessible to UK applicants, has shortlisted Bloomsbury Publishing, Bonnier Books, and Springer Nature. The Audiobook Publisher of the Year shortlist, which US publishers dominate, also includes Macmillan Audio, Princeton University Press, and Pushkin Industries.

The Bookstore of the Year category, including the Dukagjini Bookstore in Kosovo, MINOA in Turkey, and STRANDLÜFER Verlagsbuchhandlung in Germany, is full of debuts.

The London Book Fair's director, Gareth Rapley, stated: "The London Book Fair champions excellence in publishing, and the 2023 International Excellence Awards shortlist is a welcome reminder of the many inspirational companies working arduously to publish a more inclusive and accessible space.

"In acknowledgment of the rising importance of sustainability within the business, LBF is especially happy to welcome the new category. We congratulate our nominees and look forward to The London Book Fair 2023 when we get together and celebrate our international colleagues.

On Wednesday, April 19, a public event at Olympia London will honor the International Excellence Awards winners and the London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
